Improved antennas are always the first step to
improved reception and transmission, I agree.
The challenge is that we may be on an extended
trip where we will be operating using mobile and
portable antennas, which are always a performance
compromise over good base antennas.
I have a couple of portable beams for 2/440 but
HF could be another thing entirely! A dipole is
likely to be the best I can hope for portable, a
vertical when mobile.
Once we have optimized what we can do on the antenna
side we will need to use an amplifier to compensate
for lost efficiency on the transmit side.
