Center wire from a short section of peeled-back coax
just long enough to get through the car wall from
the FC-40 to the whip.

The coax insulation would defend it against shorting
out against the chassis or other metal on the way
there.

I am guessing you'd let the shield float for such
a short distance, not enough potential capacitance
to create a problem 160-6M.

I am just guessing from all that I read when I was
going to buy a 897D & FC-40. (The purchase has been
postponed.)

You might try the towertalk at contesting.com list
and the mobile-portable at mailman.qth.net list for
better info.  I have cc'd the latter.
