[Mobile-Portable] Mobile antenna tuner questions

JV,

It's OK to disagree, but you are incorrect in the fact that because
you have 100 watts at the base of the antenna, you're radiating 100 watts
from the antenna. The only power you can radiate is what's dropped by the
radiation resistance of your antenna. Any other resistance, ground, vehicle,
ohmic losses in the coil will take away from your radiated power. If you
could measure all these losses, you'd find out your 100 watt input is
probably only radiating 5 watts worth of power. If you want more radiated
power, move up to one of those shorty type screwdriver antennas. You'll be
amazed!!

Sorry, I am going to disagree with you on your statement that a 20 M
mobile antenna

only radiates 30 watts. I county hunt with a modified Hustler and at the
base of the antenna I have

100 watts from my IC-706MKIIG. The antenna is mounted on the roof in the
center of my Cherokee.

Hello,

In answer to your question, you would be better off

buying used Hustler mobile antenna's, they work as

well as any. It is essential that mobile antenna's are

self resonant at the chosen frequency, using a

stainless steel whip and a tuner would be an induced

resonancy, and would be a very poor antenna on every

band. Even the best mobile antenna's are so

inefficient that a 100 watts from the rig means that

on 20 metres only about 30 watts or less is being

radiated, and on 80 metres it amounts to about 1 watt

!
