[Mobile-Portable] Hustler Antennas

Hi Art
Would you believe I have done all of what you have suggested. When 30
meters first came out, I rewound a 40M Super for 30M.
My main mobile antenna is a modified Hustler that is used for county
hunting on the 20M band. You will love this. It is an eighty meter STANDARD
resonator that was rewound with 28 turns of #12 wire. I use the solid masts
and this antenna has a Lawson 49 inch (I think) tip. It has a 1:5 to 1:1
over the entire band. I would guess it has a 3db gain over the unmodified
resonator. Mounted on top of the Cherokee, it is around 14 feet from ground.
For obvious reasons, I use the Hustler stainless steel quick disconnects, hi
hi.
The bite from CW on the antenna is similar to an electric fence. Not bad
but it will get your attention.
The heat from the standard resonator is higher than the super.

Running 50 or 100 watts on the same mast with both resonators in turn
might give you a wee shock. If you've ever disassembled said
resonators, you'll note the Super Resonators have a huge amount of
aluminum. You also might want to touch the coil soon after transmitting
at let's say 100 watts on both and note that the coil of the super
resonator is hotter to the touch and please note, I am not suggesting
being an imitation dummy load and doing it while your rig is keyed up,
I'm told that really smarts.
