First, when you turn off the Metron does the distortion go away?

Depending upon how you're powering your amplifier, you may actually be 
reducing the voltage available to the Icom 706, producing distortion. 
Also if you're using remote mounting of the 706 with a detached head, 
you might want to look at some means of adding ferrite beads to both the 
control head and the body of the radio.  Finally about the only other 
likely source of RF getting back into the radio is through the power 
leads and ferrite cores on the power cord might be a solution IF that's 
the problem.
