Over the years I have heard of two reasons the grounding straps have fallen 
out of favor:

1.  During a lightning storm an automobile has always been a safe haven 
because it's tires don't offer a path to ground.  A strap provides that path.

2.  If you suffer a gasoline or other flammable fluid leak, a spark from a 
strap can ignite it.

These may be urban legends, but they have kept me from utilizing grounding 
straps.
