Owen,
The RF on the outside of your coax is not standing waves it is RF pickup
from proximity to the radiating portion of your antenna. Pickup may be more
prevalent with a poor ground. Standing waves result from an impedance mismatch
between your transmitter, coax and/or antenna. The efficiency of most HF
Mobil antenna's is so bad that RF pickup on coax is insignificant in comparison.
Anyone who owns a network analyzer probably knows all of this anyway. I'm
jealous, I use to have to borrow one from work.

My antenna is a home brew bug catcher that I describe on my QRZ.com Bio. I
built it to handle my amplifier that had melted down several commercial Mobil
antenna's. I am considering the HI-Q 4 or 5 inch motor driven coil for
convenience of band changing.
73,
Terry, K7FE
