[Mobile-Portable] All-in-one radio versus seperate rdaios?

I faced this same decision several years ago when I was thinking about
getting rid of my TS-50 and replacing it with a 706 or an FT-100.
Ultimately, everyone I asked about the decision told me to keep the TS-50.
That turned out to be good advice.

Instead of spending money on a new 3-band radio, I bought a dual band
UHF/VHF rig and later on bought a ClearSpeech DSP speaker for the TS-50. I
found out that I liked having the dual-bander and the HF rig in operation
simultaneously, particularly during my daily commute.

That was my reasoning but yours may be different. You can save a bundle of
money by purchasing a used TS-50 or one of the early 706's and then pick up
a dual-bander. A good friend in right in the middle of the 706 or FT-100
decision. His take was that the 706 was much easier to use than the
FT-100. I've never operated either so I can't comment. I can tell you
that the TS-50 is very simple to operate.

Be carefull if you buy a dual-bander. Some of them are more complicated to
operate than a modern day HF rig! I have a pair of Kenwood TM-V7's. Great
radios but VERY complicated!!

Subject: [Mobile-Portable] All-in-one radio versus seperate rdaios?

This might have been hashed out in the past but I missed it so humor me,

I am looking at getting my but in gear and finally getting my rover project
moving forward but was deliberating over the radios to be used. Mainly
should I go with something like the FT-100D for 3 bands in one radio or
since the rigors of a rover/mobile setup can be harsh would it also make
sense to go with a little older radios one per band and save the FT-100D
for
the safety of the house?

I understand the FT-100D is a rugged radio, but one of my concerns is that
if one of the three VHF bands die, I will have to send the whole radio in
for repairs whereas a seperate radio per band would I only lose that band
while reparing or replacement if needed.

Also would be a little easier on my wallet to buy a piece at a time for
around $200.00 per band than a $800.00 shot all at once.

As usual, I know you folks won't steer me wrong...
