 >So the base of the antenna has a capacitor? Thought it was a straight
 >connection.

No, the way the thru the glass antennas work is have a capacitor formed
by the two pieces of metal on the outside and inside of the glass. When
they work, they work, although some folks claim not very well. I had an
old Avanti 2m antenna that moved on and off 4 separate cars and it was
about as effective as a 5/8 wave mag mount in terms of hearing and
getting out. Think of the two pieces of metal as a variable capacitor
that gets tuned by moving one of the pieces and you'll get how it works,
with a resonant circuit as part of the antenna.

 >But yes, I think I will give it a shot since its here anyway. I take
 >it my chances will be better to go for a half wave antenna too.

That's why I said experiment, if it works then you're in good shape.
Incidentally I forgot to mention that there was a coil in most of the
antennas to act as the rest of the tuned circuit too, I learned to move
the pieces first for an approximate match on an 86 Toyota Tercel Wagon
and how they were made later.
