Hi Joe,
A few comments. I also drive a BMW, '87 325IS and have had no real
trouble with 2m FM. With the ignition on there are a couple of spurs
from the computer that can be heard but none have been found in the 2m
band. When driving with the cruise engaged if I use 25W or more when I
transmitt there seems to be a slight loading of the engine though the
speed never changes. I suspect a little RF is getting into the computer
that changes the mixture somehow but not enough for the computer to
report a problem or to change speed. I also go directly to the battery
in the trunk and the antenna is a Larsen mounted through the trunk lid.
I have a little ignition noise that I think I will have to work on
before I go to HF. Remember that the computer is mounted over the glove
box so it best not to mount the radio too close.
I don't think that you will have any real problems with the rig
mounted in the trunk, if you ground it good to the battery and the
chassis near the battery and keep the SWR on the antenna below 2:1.
Let me know what you find as I'm planning on buying another BMW in the
next year or so (219K on the present one) and would like to know of any
problems discovered.
