I long have wondered about these seemingly miraculous antennas. The only way to get away from radials, the ground image of the radiating  element, is to have the radiating element 1/2 wave resonant. I am still puzzled how that's done in a 43 foot antenna on 80 and 40. The only way i see to do that is folded back wires. Because the current is not the same everywhere in the overall length, there is not complete cancellation of radiating current by the folded back wire. That's one cheater way to get a dipole down to 1/4 wave. Or maybe to get 1/4 wave antenna element to look like 1/2 wave high Z.
