[Milsurplus] Why 50 ohm coax?

The military standardized on 50 ohm impedance and spent vast sums of money developing cables and connectors 

"Vast sums?"  I'm sure they thought that at the time, but by today's standards I'm sure it would seem insignificant.   And it actually had a relatively meaningful impact, unlike many other projects.
