Once you've seen a plastics tag that has the 4 screw mounting corners ripped out because of the tag's shrinkage, you will forget any idea of resuscitating the tag.
BTW, i just last night cleaned off a Heathkit HD-1250 dip meter where the black foam insulating material had turned to sticky crumbly. It sure didn't take a lot of 
years for this material to decay. Certainly not the worst case i have encountered; some of this plastics foam turns more petroleum like. When i was still working,
i threw a test set away, sent it to surplus disposal, because the insulating foam in its trunk was that ugly.
