I suppose the seller thinks the modifications ADD to the utility and value. 
It's actually kind of funny. The amputated BC-652 i was offered back around 1980, $75 was a lot more money then, too. 
What a waste of time that trip was. Well, win some, lose some.

I recall one other thing of interest. One of our customers was a WWII Philippines campaign vet. He told me he had a whole Russian ship's spark
radio in his basement. I now surmise it was one of the old radios swapped off a Russian freighter according to the US Lend-Lease agreement. 
I suppose that ancient radio equipment all went to the dump when he passed away.
