somehow been amputated. Seller was offended that my interest immediately 
went to less than zero."

I've run into several sellers over the years that get offended, some 
even go totally off the rails, when they offer up some old piece of 
equipment, that looks like it's been de-milled with a hand grenade, as 
if someone interested in such a unique item wouldn't notice at first 
glance.  Of course, they never mention this up front...

As it's been more than one, across several decades, there must be a 
specific name for this particular psychological malady.
