> Is there anything lower than hijacking a dead man's email account?
Could have been hijacked, at any point, from anywhere. Sometimes
scammers sit on addresses for years.
I get a half dozen spam email to my old callsign account per year, not
in use since 2001, when I upgraded my license.
You could easily be getting things from "Pete" in the mid to
late-2040's, and, of course, anyone who gets it then, may have an email
program that saves senders addresses, gets compromised, gets hijacked
again, and perpetuates this for several more decades. Even if the owner
is gone, even if that ISP no longer exists, it can still just be
"spoofed", coming from anyone, anywhere, but looking legit.
Late last year, I started getting email for deals on new Subaru
vehicles, right out of the blue. I clicked the "update my profile" on
one, which walked me into the info they had on "me", so I could update
personal details, change/save the info, et cetera. I've had that
particular account since 1999. The info, was from a Subaru owner, who
bought a new car, prior to '99, same first initial, same last name, had
an earthlink account before me. Subaru sat on the info, and didn't
start sending out weekly emails, until late 2023. I verified the info,
it was all legit. I remember checking regularly back then, and snagging
the email address, when the old owner switched ISPs, been using it ~25
years now myself, but all that woman's info is just NOW making the
rounds, and I'm getting her messages for 25 year old interactions.
These people are fu*king nuts!
Kurt
