"For the fixed wire antennas, aircraft such as the B17 used a heavy
insulated wire with a hard drawn single conductor copper wire, covered
in a plastic that is about 1/4 inch thick."

I don't go back that far, all the ones I've seen from the 80's onward,
use stainless cable.

I'm using 1/4" stainless steel wire rope for my antennas, with heavy
copper ring terminals crimped on the ends, then I solder the stainless
and copper together for a good electrical connection, then shrink tube
the joint with several inches of T&B (Thomas & Betts) 3:1 thick wall
adhesive lined shrink tube.

All my joints like this point down, so I didn't think to back-fill with
some really thin cyanoacrylate on my last project, but will do that in
the future, just as an added measure to protect the joints.

10 years straight, horrible conditions, no issues.

Kurt
