Yes, that seems a practical idea. Then you could lower the coupling until the IF  squealed, maybe. 
I'm eager to revisit this idea and procedure, but i have to put it off for now. 

I spent probably actual hours trying to figure out how to reconfigure the ARC-2 circuit, but it 
probably best be left just as it is, as nutty as it is. I posted before that the multiple RF stages
and so on is, i think, to get super control of AGC for signals from DX to next door. I would like
to try the regenerative idea that Roy Paffenburg described in his booklet.
