I am sick to death of alkaline batteries leaking. Over the past ten years or so I watched the leakage rate of these batteries (at my work we used a lot of them) go through the roof!
I've seen them brand-new leaking in the package! I tried the pro and consumer version of Eveready, Duracell, and Ray-o-Vac. They all ended up being untrustworthy in regard to leakage.
After one more good flashlight destroyed I contacted the customer service of all three brands with my complaints. Only Ray-o-Vac responded, and all they did was offer to replace the batteries.
A ham here in town is retired from Ray-O-Vac. He says that the reason for the change was that a vent was added by all companies to prevent explosion of alkaline batteries. I've never seen one explode even when hugely mistreated, so that seems an odd reason. Maybe something an insurance company came up with? He suggested this new vent is the reason we see so many leaking batteries these days.
I've started using the so-called "heavy-duty" non-alkaline batteries in some devices. Their life is much shorter but I've not seen one leak (so far).
For applications where I need the longer life of alkaline batteries I now use Amazon Basics brand. So far no leaks with them, but I'm only a couple years into using them. I've also heard good things about Harbor Freight's alkalines. I've have a few around now to see how they go.
