The plane actually practically reversed course and was travelling back roughly in the direction it came, resulting in being over the USSR
instead of Alaska. Imagine that. Crew said, total guidance system failure. Occurred to me today, IF planes still have LF-MF direction 
finders, or even just receiver, they could have tuned around to see what local stations were and where from. They certainly had time.
