Hi Al,
It might be useful to contact a clock repair 
person (that barrel appears to be too large to be 
a watch) to see if this can be repaired with a 
new mainstring. It can't hurt to ask and 
something like this is right up their ally. The 
repair is also a bit unique, which some clock repairers enjoy.

a Carriage clock of mine and did very excellent 
work. He was very knowledgeable in all the 
dealings I had with him. Just an idea.
