I'm hoping to identify, and find a replacement, for a box I had a little
over thirty years ago.
Unfortunately, looking online for 'surplus military box' on and off over
the years isn't' adequate to find something.
It was probably bought as surplus in the 1960's. My brother used it for
storing bits and pieces. I acquired it in the late 70's, and gave it
away around 1991.
From what I recall, it MAY have been Navy in origin.
It was small-ish, about 14" side-to-side, maybe 8" deep, and about 6" high.
The box was was of steel, painted gray, may have had stenciling on it
(faded), maybe the word "Spares", at some point. There was a mark on
the inside of the lid that suggested there was a label at some point inside.
Overall it looked like a shoebox in design, the edges, and corners where
crisply folded, and welded.
The lid was very much like a shoebox lid, it fit snugly, and had a piano
hinge along one long edge, and a surprisingly small padlock hasp on the
other long edge, more like one would see on luggage.
One each short side, or end, left and right, if you set the box in front
of you, crosswise, were two steel handles. These were thin, about 1/8"
in diameter, and sat in steel brackets that were spot welded to the box.
The box was divided into compartments inside, not all the same size.
I'm thinking four compartments total, one was odd in the it was about 2"
wide, at one end, not really practical for storage, but was probably for
a cable.
Ring any bells? I'm hoping to find this exact box.
Kurt
