Well, Dave, that is a real interesting observation. It seems that if the bias network for the transistor
is robust enough, in terms of setting the base-emitter bias for a specific range of base currents, the 
bias network defines the collector current, so the differences in individual transistors is "washed out".
I'll have to keep that in mind when I see some interesting project schematic using Ge transistors, or
when I have to service some older receiver. Something well worth trying.
