When I was doing mobile radio 35 years ago these antenna bases were used
for stainless steel whips that were cut for the 40 MHz band, referred to
as "low band" by the mobile radio techs. Here in California the Highway
Patrol were on "low band" and the utility company I worked for also used
"low band" along with some other public agencies. Over time they were
replaced by Motorola style MNO mount loading coils and 48 inch whips cut
to size for the frequency.
The older solid metal mounts are hard to find used and expensive to buy
new and most are of an inferior stamped metal design.
