I'd just like to add my congratulations to Ray Robinson on his excellent article in ER. It was especially interesting to me as I've flown aircraft using both types of radios discussed in the article; ARC-5 radios as a Naval Aviation Cadet in the North American SNJ, and ARC Type-12 radios as a Navy Flight instructor in the Beechcraft T-34B. In my collection are working examples of both kinds of radios. And yes, I've heard FM on an ARC Type-12 AM receiver. When cranked down as far as the dial would go below 108 MHz, I could hear music on one of the Pensacola, FL FM stations while flying around the Pensacola area. Must be slope detection happening.
