Two years ago I was up in WA state and helping my brother take some junk to the "transfer

site". It was actually an interesting new auditory and olfactory experience for me. Whereas

our local dump, still called a "dump" by most, has seagulls as the scavengers, I actually saw

a rat scampering across the large concreted, covered dump site in Mountlake Terrace, WA.

That surprised me, as what I saw dumped out the back of pickup trucks was old carpets,

construction debris, yard debris, and whatnot. Anyway, to the point. When you have metal,

there's a concrete chasm you pull up to, and you throw your metal down into it. I saw your

suburban yuppie in the car ahead of me toss a couple bikes into the pit. I thought, those are

the kind of bikes we rode as youngsters, and we didn't feel any loss of dignity for doing so,

and we repaired them as needed. In a corner of the covered dump-off area, there was an

area for lumber only. There were some warning signs to keep out, but i observed that no one

was really paying much attention, so I went over there. There were like 1/2 sheets of plywood

and 2 x 4's remnants of usable length, and all clean enough to eat off. I grabbed a bunch of

2 x 4's and swiftly loaded them back into our pickup. I thought, there's enough lumber here

for people in many countries I can think of to build a decent home. Oh well. I did get a nail in

my foot for my trouble, so I suppose they're right to not allow free grazing in that area. Still,

all that good usable stuff going to destruction.

Below: small city dump. Flock of seagulls at rear had heard that today's menu offered
"Garden Salad".

Yes, this is extremely OT, but I think the bandwidth police might forgive me again.
