In Richard O'Kane's memoir "Clear the Bridge" he talks about his sub,
the USS Tang, being assigned to lifeguard duty off Truk during a
carrier task force strike on that atoll. He mentions several times
using a Hallicrafters receiver to guard 4475 in the AIC (aviation
information center) which they had set up in the mess. He also
mentions guarding a VHF tactical frequency and piping it in from the
radio room.
Never says which model Hallicrafters(I've always wondered!), but I
believe it was originally installed in the mess as a morale receiver
at Mare Island. So an SX-24 may not be completely out of place on a
sub.
