[Milsurplus] Radium paint and Xrays

Hello,
The danger wasn’t from the HV rectifier in the old color TVs. It was from the early shunt regulators. The later versions were made with a special lead glass. I have one of the old shunt regulators in my collection. There used to be projects floating around to make experimental x-Ray machines, but I never made one. Too dangerous, imho.
I think if you use the right kind of clear coat, it won’t discolor. There are different paints for different purposes. I heard about the clear-coating. I believe the online article said clear laquer. They may make a clear automotive laquer that is durable and won’t degrade.
For those of you with a TBX, do the markings still glow?
73,Mike.

Meters are dismissable as a risk, i think. But radium paint on front panels and heavens, knobs, can't be turned off. I think Walt Hitchins'k ( sp ? ) article in E.R. was a very rational guide on how to regard it. We can live with it, no reason to call out the bomb disposal experts. I wonder if those TV lead-shielded  rectifier tubes are now collectibles?Hue Miller
