The BC-224-A is a totally different radio, looks more like the BC-342. They completely reworked it from the B model on. The B and C models did not have the lower 2 bands on them like all made after that. The "S" model is a "C" model that was sent to Belmont Radio where they added the two extra band. A second Tag was added in the upper right corner to identify it being the "S" variant. I have two of those. There was no "A" model in the BC-348 line, I believe the "B" was first. My "B" model is serial number 139 so it's very early.
No 110 volt versions were made that I'm aware of, but, there are rumors that Hallicrafters made a drop-in 110v supply at some point. I saw one years ago but nobody has verified (to me) it was made during war time. I suspect it was aftermarket after the war. The BC-224 were all 12vdc and were pretty well identical to the 24vdc 348's (except for the filament circuit) I have one 224-E with dynamotor, the one I need a Tag for.
The naming convention of these models is strange to me too.
The knob for the two "B" models is the same size and shape as the typical BC-348 knob except the finish is cross-hatched and not ribbed. I suppose the ribbed knobs were cheaper to make, but then who knows why the Signal Corps did what they did! The dial lamp dimmer wire-wound had been removed on the "B" model I have. I've replaced the circuit but not the knob. That's why I only need one.

Except maybe the knobs do not have the ridges all around the perimeter, is that what you mean? That the -B knob is smooth all around the perimeter surface? I don't recall that the BC-224-A set has this style knob or not. BTW, I had always thought BC-348-S meant the AC power converted -348. But jamminpower has the manual for the BC-348-S and BC-224-L and these both are 24 volts. I was also surprised by the wide difference in series letters, S versus L. -Hue Miller Greeting Again: I posted the need for a knob a while back, thought I'd repeat it "just in case" somebody stumbled across one, here's a rerun: Greetings: I'm trying to locate a single round knob for a BC-348. I'm restoring a BC-348-B (Serial #139) and this is one of the final hurdles. This is not the typical "ribbed" knob we all know, this has a cross-hatched or knurled finish. It may be been typical of the early BC-224's too, although I'm only guessing since this by far the oldest example I've worked with. Thanks.. And yes, this is accurate. Looking at the illustrations in the original BC-224-B/BC-348-B manual, you can clearly see the knurled knobs. My "C" model has the typical ribbed version. Being the age it is and my assumption that it's somewhat rare, I had my doubts in the beginning too. This is the volume/beat freq, etc, knob. In addition, I've had no luck digging up a BC-224-E tag either and need it to complete another project. My junk box couldn't produce one. Perhaps somebody will stumble across one, someday. It would be greatly appreciated. These are collected by me and not resold... Thanks!!! de NE5DX Don Spivey.. ______________________________________________________________
