Not every reader of these groups has done all the arduous work of earning an M.A. in 'Surplus Radio Literature', so I'll mention this story.
CQ magazine had this anecdote many years ago. It seems an American radioman on Guadalcanal was working CW to a remote station,
but every time he came on the air, a Japanese station came up on the same frequency and started jamming his transmission. According to
his account, he had a Signal Shifter. What he did was have someone else listen on the frequency, and when the Japanese station had settled
on the frequency and was happily transmitting away, he cleverly moved the Shifter slightly away, and had enough time before the Japanese
discovered this, that he was able to get his message out. The story doesn't identify the actual transmitter type, but it is presented as nonfiction.
Right now, I don't know. I would have to reread that story.
For some reason, because minds work by association, these lines from a rock band from the 1990s comes to mind, a song by the band
"Guadalcanal Diary", which is also the name of a once well known WWII memoir:
"Two girls waited by the railroad track
One wore yellow, and one wore black"
I seem to recall, this song is based on an earlier song, maybe dating to the American Civil War.
There was another CQ story, "A Doll for Rosafina", I think, where Japanese soldiers visit a Philippine home and see signs of recent disturbed
earth. They suspect the man of having buried clandestine arms or material for the guerilla movement, and they force him to dig it up. They
are disappointed when all they discover is a child's broken doll. When they leave, it's revealed that the man's clandestine receiver - transmitter
is buried just a little deeper than the doll, which was a diversion. This story is clearly fiction, but I thought it was very cute. I think a scene like
that would work well in the movie version of "They Fought Alone", which I read - before the plague - was being filmed.

Subject: Meissner Signal Shifter coils
I have about 12 new boxed 3 coils sets for the Meissner Signal Shifter, also, I am told, for
the Meissner 150 transmitter. Note, not desirable frequencies ! I have mostly boxes
of 2395 to 2835 kHz and 2 boxes of some 6+ MHz frequency range. I know there are a
few Shifters still out there at work and a vanishingly small number of Meissner 150s.
Maybe these coils could be modified for more useful Signal Shifter use by removing
turns. If you own one of these transmitters and you "need" such a coil set, you can let
me know. I think after this initial mention, which is just to see if there's any want or
need out there, I may try a set or two on Ebay. If they don't seem to be a hot item, I
may keep the coils just as coilforms for vintage regen receivers. Each Meissner box
contains 3 coils, one each 4, 5, 6 pins. I don't think as-is they have any use for such
regen receivers as the windings aren't optimized for that use. Perhaps coil wire could
be removed and the coilform reused.
