As per Henry Rogers, WA7YBS at: http://www.radioblvd.com/Collins_51J_Receivers.htm
R-388A/URR and R-388B/URR - US Navy version of 51J-4 - it is unknown if this model was actually produced (or tagged as such) even though it's listed in the Navy books. Same with the R-388B. These receivers may actually have the 51J-4 designation on the ID tag.
I do not understand the finer details of the Navy procurement system (does anyone?) but I realize that the Navy had stringent requirements for electronics aboard ships. Perhaps rivaling those environmental conditions found in aircraft or guided missiles.
For instance, the URC-32 is a suitably modified KWT-6 Type 8 in a shorter, shock mounted, equipment rack. The Collins part numbers may be different but AFAIK, there is no physical difference in the various KWT-6 type assemblies v the URC-32.
That said, perhaps the Navy was just dotting the "i's" and crossing the "t's" in assigning a Federal Stock Number for the 51J-4 and the modified with mechanical filters 51J-3 aka R-388 receivers? Is there a physical difference between an 51J-3 and an R-388?Regards,Jim

I agree, Dennis. I’ve never seen an R-388A tag either. I do have a manual labeled Navy Model R-388A/URR NAVSHIPS 92324 (0967-994-9010) which is a US Govt Printing Office reprint of a 1960 Collins 51J-4 manual.

Hi Nick, For what it’s worth, I have been an R-388 connoisseur for about 50 years now. Although I have heard of the listing of an R-388A, I have never actually seen an ID tag with “R-388A” on it, but have seen R-388s with mechanical filters. So I do suspect an R-388A is simply an R-388 with the upgrade kit installed, but they never created (to my knowledge) R-388A tags. Never heard of or saw an R-388B, though. Subject: Re: [Milsurplus] R-388B/URR receiver The 51J-4 version would be the R-388A. The "B" model has a different stock number but I have never found anything at all about it - just a listing in "Bureau of Ships Controlled Electronics Equipment (F Cognizance)", NAVSHIPS 92563(B).R-388A/URR is FSN 5820-557-5140 (formerly 5820-557-5139) - listed in 1956R-388B/URR is FSN 5820-897-8314 - listed in 1961Cheers,Nick England K4NYW

Nick, I think it’s the R-388 with the upgrade kit (mechanical filters+switch) to the equivalent of the 51J-4. 73, Meir WF2ULandrum, SC From: milsurplus-bounces at mailman.qth.net On Behalf Of Nick England
