When I used an RAL in the past I seem to have never used it to receive AM. 
I don't recall, can the audio filter be switched out for AM reception ?
The only quirk I recall with using regens on HF listening was that you become very aware of fades.
There is no AGC to compensate. 

Partridge Electronics U.K. had this sentence on the advert for one of their little receivers:
