Hi Brian,
When i visited the Naval Air Museum in Pensacola many years ago, there was a PBM outside, still being restored and not available for close view. The highlight for mil surplus radio fans is the cutaway of the PBY where you can reach in and actually touch the radios in the radio compartment. The Hickory Museum sounds interesting.
I didn't know Hughes practiced on a PBM prior to flying his Spruce Goose. Attached is a photo of Hughes taxi testing a radio controlled flying boat model on some body of water. BTW, making magneto and propeller pitch checks in any seaplane can get interesting. Since they have no brakes, you are committed to high speed taxiing (up to 60 knots) while checking the mags. And since you can check only one engine at a time, you have to deal with the asymmetrical thrust in a multi-engine aircraft.
