Brian, Nick and anyone else who cares to comment,

In my previous post, I forgot to mention that the SH34J was built by Sikorsky. So, you can see all the connections I have with this PBS documentary: Sikorsky, Martin, Seaplanes, Caribbean, Direction Finders, aircraft radios, over-water navigation, Alameda, Navy, Golden Gate.

Regarding the part about the early airmail overland navigation, a fellow hired me to ferry a Fournier RF4D motor glider (37-foot wingspan, 39 hp WV engine, cruises at 100 mph, aerobatic and handles like a small fighter plane) from a small airport north of Chicago to Torrance, CA. Plane had no radios of any kind, and the only navigation equipment was compass, airspeed and my wristwatch. On the leg from Chicago to Pampa, TX, I discovered that all the towns in the mid-west along my route look alike from the air. There's a river, a railroad track, and a highway (all parallel to each other) and a grain elevator and a water tower. The only way I could verify witch town was witch was to fly low enough to read the names off the water towers.

Regarding the loop antenna, I see now that it amounts to a big, rectangular toroid. Theoretically, it should not be able to pickup or transmit anything as its magnetic field is confined within its windings, In this case the wooden frame of the loop. So, I'm still baffled as to how it worked. What am I missing?
