Hi

Unfortunately the real answer with any of the tube testers is “they need calibration”. There are a lot of 
parts in them that are not as stable as one might think they are. Once you accept that, the answer is a 
bit easier:

Put in the diodes

Put in a resistor 

Put in a stack of Zener diodes to regulate the B+ better

Calibrate the device 

Is that a pain? Sure it is.
