On the store magazine racks right now is a large magazine - format offering, "The Titanic", $13.
I bought this at the Fred Meyer ( Kroger ) store. Probably no new groundbreaking material here,
but I found it quite interesting throughout. There are a lot of graphics, lots of stories on various
interesting Titanic facts and stories; furniture, menus, artifacts, survivors, myths, more. For me,
the listing and reviews of the various 'Titanic' movies over the years is really interesting, and I'll
look these up as time allows. If you're still intrigued by this story, you might want to look up this
book.
There is one photo of a radio room, I show it below. At first I thought, that can't be right - it looks
really cramped, and the operator is sitting on what looks like a crate? The accompanying text
comments on the radio operator job as offering upward mobility for working class young men,
but does not claim this photo to be the Titanic radio room. Possibly they got this image from a
postcard or period wireless magazine.
I noticed in the last few years the magazine racks tend to more and more of these "special editions",
with titles such as "Women of the Bible", "Gut Health", "The Mind of the Dog", anything that might
fly. My guess is that as paper subscriptions to all kinds of publications continue to decline, this is
the way periodical publishers try to maintain. 'Special edition', special reports, "Collector Edition"
( right....), and so on. It seems to me, but not sure, that this was the publishing model in much of the
underdeveloped 'Third World' countries, not that this is not necessarily a judgment; I'm just commenting
on the changes I see.
