The Germans also had them. They also copied the WE316A tube but with different filament ratings. 73 – Mike

Hue,

The following comes fro Sibley's "Tube Lore."
The acorn tubes were introduced by RCA in 1935, and were just about the only game in town for VHF/UHF receiving tubes, until the miniature tubes were introduced in late 1939. The design was licensed to the Japanese. So they show up in equipment on both sides. The eraly part numbers were:

954 6V Pentode
955 6V Triode
956 Remote-cutoff Pentode.

957 1.25V Triode
958 1.25V Transmitting Triode
959 1.25V Remote-cutoff Pentode.

The 954, 955, and 956 morph into the early miniature types 9001. 9002. and 9003 that appear in some military equipment.

Get a copy of Tube Lore if you don't already have one, it's a treasure.

Al

The only WW2 radio I am familiar with that used acorn tubes is the TBY.

How about you ? Any comment ? Your information will be useful !

Hey Hue,

Do you remember anything about the RCA 955 tube? The Acorn? Just Wondering. Stay safe.

Hey Hue,

How are you doing - "trapped at the coast?" Are you staying healthy? You have nicer scenery than us who dwell in the city, believe me.

I'm running this 1934 story about the development of the "Acorn" tube in the BALD LETTER (attached). But it leaves us at 1934. What can you tell me about where the tiny tube went during WWII? Did it keep getting used? (It was named the 955 by RCA, but I find very little mention of it after the war.) I'd like to publish your memories in the Bald Letter, so I'd appreciate it if you'd send them my way (and maybe not post them on the e-group :).

Thanks, Dick and the Way Radio Was
