Hue,
The following comes fro Sibley's "Tube Lore."
The acorn tubes were introduced by RCA in 1935, and were just about the
only game in town for VHF/UHF receiving tubes, until the miniature tubes
were introduced in late 1939. The design was licensed to the Japanese.
So they show up in equipment on both sides. The eraly part numbers were:
954 6V Pentode
955 6V Triode
956 Remote-cutoff Pentode.
957 1.25V Triode
958 1.25V Transmitting Triode
959 1.25V Remote-cutoff Pentode.
The 954, 955, and 956 morph into the early miniature types 9001. 9002.
and 9003 that appear in some military equipment.
Get a copy of Tube Lore if you don't already have one, it's a treasure.
