I still wonder why the FCC used so many more SX-28s, walls of them, instead of the Hammarlund. Maybe it was the Hammarlund required 
the external supply ? And was more expensive ? 
I talked to Jim Barrows, W7BCT, many years ago about this. He didn't know either, but as I ( "maybe" ) recall, he said the Hallicrafters did 
have the feature of the dial lock. ( Now I wonder, did they ? Or only SX-28-FCC ? )  
He did recognize the McLaughlin add-on SSB unit which together with the SX-28 made up the SSR-1.
