Thanks for the recommendations of warm-white LEDs, LEDs with built in reflectors, and flat-top LEDs. I will look into trying all these types too. 
Yes, I did note the color of the LED I used was a little "cold". However after it's projected thru the tuning scale, it is not bad at all.  I also
just hung the LED sideways next to the dial scale, not pointing at it, and even this lit the dial scale enough to be entirely usable. The tuning
window of the GRC-9 receiver is narrow so there's very little side - to - side difference in light level even with one LED.
