Max Kaplan of Gig Harbor, WA, told me that when he was in the U.S.A.F. the hams organized a 'field day' DXpedtion to Ocean Island. This was in the 1950s and the U.S. military had pulled out;
only a Japanese weather reporting team occupied the island. However there were a number of U.S. vehicles left on the island. These were driven until they broke down; then crew then went on
to use the next one, til it also broke down. I think they probably didn't really need motor transport on that island.
( Cost of the cargo plane making two trips to island, apparently "off the books". )
CQ magazine in the 1950s had a photo of a Japanese 'Betty' bomber on an airfield on some island airfield, an inhabited island and airfield still used. The bomber was intact and still sitting on its
wheels, parked.
Good "shopping" in those days – IF you had a place to stash the loot, til you could somehow get it away.
