Over the last month, I've been working on a BC-342. With parts
from list members, and another parts chassis that came my way,
finally got it all back together. Did the usual work a BC-342
requires.
Buttoned it up last night, on its mount, with an LS-3.
Had it on about 4 straight hours, listening to HF air traffic,
40 and 20 meters, and the MRCG CW net last night.
(Poor conditions, all signals weak here, did not try to check in).
Then tuned to WTWW(5085kc), and POP!
Receiver went dead.
This morning, found the B+ line shorted to ground. Traced to
an internal short in the CW OSC on/off switch. Luckily I had
an exact replacement in the junk box.
Once I removed the bad switch, started to to a post mortem,
and guess what? Short gone, and it withstood 400V from terminals
to body, but switch now in trash.
