[Milsurplus] BX-40 use only in FM sets ?

Was looking at a BX-40 to decide whether to keep or give to a friend with the FM tank set. I see Radionerds says this also can hold FT-243 rocks for the SCR-284.
Hmmm.....the SCR-284 does not use crystals, it is only VFO, right? SCR-583 does have crystal/ VFO choice but I don't recall seeing this box in its manual either.
