I think I have only seen one, maybe two,  receivers with a BFO level control, and that in some old publication.
Yes, receivers with no 'product detector', you have to back off the RF/IF gain control to try to get SSB to come
in clearly.

One fellow said the square pins sounded to him like wire wrap pins. I had not thought of that at all, although I
used a wire wrap gun for many years.
