[Milsurplus] 7 - pin plugs for transistorizing tubes ?

We recently had a discussion about solidstating tube equipment. One poster talked about his project to transistorize the R-392.
My kind of project - or at least, to think about.
So I obtained some 7 pin plugs to build solidstate onto. I noted that these plugs have square pins, though, not round. I found
that these seat very hard. In fact, pushing the plug pretty hard, as hard as I would really want or dare to, the plug only partially
seated. Perhaps this is enough, but it doesn't do much for my confidence in continued functioning. So my question is, what were
these plugs intended to mate with ??? I find it hard to imagine that you had to hammer them home. That would make them
quite hard to ever remove?
thanks-
Hue Miller
