[Milsurplus] Finding pree-WW2 call sign

I realize this may be kind of off-topic, but I promise not to go on and
on about it, and I'm guessing maybe someone here might have an idea
where I could go in my search. ...

I had a cousin who was a ham prior to WW2, served as a radio operator on
a Navy tanker and died in the Battle of the Coral Sea a couple of months
before I was born.  When I became interested in shortwave radio his
mother sent my mother one of his blank QSL cards for me.  That card was
lost after I left home in my late teens.  I am wondering if there is any
place to look to find what his amateur radio call was.  Any help would
be appreciated.

Thanks much,

Dan
