The BC-654-A is a pretty good AM and CW pack set. On the other hand, it was
designed to operate in vehicles with either positive or negative ground.
And the designer would appear to have favored positive ground. The
schematic of the BC-654-A is about the most difficult to wrap your head
around of any that I have ever encountered.
WW-II vintage Signal Corps HF pack sets include SCR-177-A or -B (BC-191 and
either BC-189 or BC-312), SCR-178 (BC-185, BC-186 and BC-187), SCR-284
(BC-654), SCR-694-C (BC-1306) and AN/TRC-2 (BC-1306 and RT-12/TRC-2). For
the Korean War through early Vietnam there is AN/GRC-9 and AN/GRC-87 (both
with RT-77 or RT-77A). For later Vietnam there is AN/PRC-47 (RT-671). From
the Navy there is the TBX and the TBW/RBM. There are also a few "suitcase"
sets but they are generally too rare to consider. And the RS-6, predecessor
to the AN/GRC-109.

I would like to hear from anyone who has used, or presently owns, a BC-654
and what is
your opinion of this piece of gear.
Also, I wouldn't mind hearing any anecdotes about or from WWII users
concerning the
BC-654 or equivalent gear.
This tyoe of gear always intrigued me.
Are there any other bits of equipment of similar type which would be better,
or at least as
good?
I am particularly interested in man-portable transmitter/receivers covering
any part of the HF
spectrum and which output modes of CW or AM.
I am sure there are many I have never heard of. So, enlighten me.
I own and operate an AN/GRC-109, if that helps. I also own the
transmitter/receiver part of a
TBX-8. I have yet to put that on the air, but plan to get that done this
summer if possible.
I did use an AN/GRC-9 when I was in the Army, but don't presently own one,
and they are
much too expensive for me to buy at this point.
