Our son, his wife, two kids and two dogs got out of Paradise early Thursday and came here, before the fire got really intense. Their house is gone. I didn't know Bill, but looked up on QRZ, seems there were about 200 hams in Paradise. And because it had a large elderly population, probably a lot of old timers on that list. Very sad to see all the burnt hulks. Still over 1000 missing according to the Sheriff's office.

That is a great pity. I also recall drooling over his surplus material ads in the early computer mags such as Byte.

Subject: [Milsurplus] Bill Godbout killed in Paradise, CA fire

Saw this in N.Y. Times, 15 Nov. 2018 :
" Also killed in the fire was Bill Godbout, 79, an influential figure in the early days of Silicon Valley who ran a popular electronics store. He was well known in the
hacker community, and remembered for his quirks, like his license to fly blimps. Robert Tuck, Mr. Godbout's grandson, said that Mr. Godbout had stayed behind
as his wife and relatives fled, probably to save his three cats….Mr. Tuck said through tears, 'He was listening to the radio report and thought he had a little more
time.' "

End quotes. When I saw the name, I recalled ads I had seen in '73' magazine, and if I recall, the ads were largely about digital electronics and early computer
components.
