[Milsurplus] AN/GRM 11

I obtained a AN/GRM 11 Transmitter made by Stromberg Carlson i 1957 Seriel Number 21.  I has 5 channels in the 1600 Khz range plus a positioin on the channel switch for the crystal socket on the front pannel.  It has a Large 3 inchg diameter bty 10 inch long loading coild pounted in the cover along with a large hank of wire .  It has a 12 volt 500 volt switching power supply, with tubes 12AG5 and 12UU7.  Sparte tubes mounted in cover.  There is a motor turning a coded wheel to key the trtansmitter.  % diffewrent codes Plus hand key.  

So what is it and what was it used for.  I would guess some sort of beacon.  I can find no information on it on the internet.  

Any help would be appreaciated.
