[Milsurplus] NOS ARR-15 / ARC-2 connectors

NeilThe ARC-5 or SCR-274N is a very different radio then the ARC-2.  The ARC-5 type connectors have miniature banana contact pins so you are sure to have positive contact using your brass tubing work around.  The ARC-2 connector, on the other hand, has long straight pins as seen in the second photo.
There is no positive contact between the ARC-2 connector pin and the brass tubing if nothing is done to force the issue.  To make matters worse, the current drawn by the ARC-2 is considerably higher then that drawn by the BC-442 antenna relay.  I don't have a manual for the ARC-2 transceiver but the same connector is also used in the ARR-15.  According to the manual, the ARR-15 receiver draws 15 amps at dynamotor start up, 8 amps during auto-tune and almost 3.5 amps the rest of the time.  All at 28 volts.
The ARR-15 connector pins are silver plated so even when tarnished, they can handle the current demand.  The plain brass tubing tarnish is nowhere near as conductive as silver plated brass so during high current demand, things are going to get pretty hot which will cause more brass oxidation which causes more heat and so on until the connection fails
Your idea is OK for a short duration test but will fail eventually if the brass tubing is not kept clean, polished and the connector pin to brass tightness is not continually adjusted.  Jim

I don't know whether this is appropriate to the radios discussed here, but I am using 1/8 x .014 brass tube to connect to two pins of my BC-442-A antenna relay. Made by K & S Precision Metals of Illinois. Catalog # 8127, length 12 inches. Nice firm fit, no crimping required. If it can sell in a hobby shop for $3.50 here in Auckland, you can bet it's less in the US.

To answer Robert's question in his 3rd paragraph below.
I did some measurements on the ARR-15 male connector pins and the mating socket contacts.  Also did the same for the K connector #10 contacts.  Obviously there must be a deeper socket depth then the pin length to prevent deforming the socket and keep proper contact tension to allow the socket to grip the pin.  Keep it clean guys!
